I Googled it and found this link helpful…maybe you will too–
Foundations Study Guide: Montessori Education
From what I know, Montessori schools offer less structure, and learn self-pace. They also are more concerned about the experience of learning as oppose to tests, quizzes, etc..
This was just two schools that I know personally. I’m not sure if this applies to all Montessori schools.
Coming from a teacher of a private Montessori setting for over 10yrs I would say Montessori establishes MORE structure in the classroom than less. Children do have freedom but within reason. Each child has there own work space whether it be at a table or on the floor and learn subjects such as Lang., Math, Zoology, Culturlas, Practical Life (in which teaches manners, taking care of oneself, taking care of the environment and taking care of others) Sensorial and Geography all to ages from 3-6yrs and sometimes younger. We teach by showing the child sensorially by giving them presentations one on one or sometimes as a group. To the children these materials look like toys but we show them they are not and teach them to respect the materials. I find the children all go at there own pace. Some maybe just turning 3 and already know how to read and do complex Math such as multiplication or division and others who have not gone through that “sensitive period” yet may still be learning there phonetics and how to use a spoon or pour. It also more sturctured in the fact that there are rules the children have to follow, like not disturbing others while working, speaking in a whisper during work time, and giving them task to do to help in taking care of their environment. Hope this helps. Good luck.
