when i was a kid ece used to be called “parenting”. i could read and write by the age of 3 and it’s not because i was gifted. my parents read to me, they took me places and they talked to me about those places. ece has come about because kids are entering kindergarten having been raised on tv and nintendo. there’s no thought process going on and kids are way behind those of a generation ago. so schools have had to institute ece to catch them up. i understand the purpose of ece but it’d be completely unnecessary if parents would be parents instead treating their kids like just another burden to dealt with.
I agree with carnaby. I could read, write some, count to a hundred in English, count to 10 in 3 other languages, tie my shoes, and recite my address and phone number before I even got into school because my parents worked with me rather than putting me in front of the tv.
Well I’m still in college studying but I graduate in a year. I feel like in high school, and when I was younger, I didnt quite understand fully the responsibility put on teachers to educate their students. They have to not only teach them about history and math but also things we dont even think about now that we are older…like reading, writing and social skills for instance. I think society as a whole doesnt understand or even think about how important early childhood education is for our young citizens. When I tell people I’m going to be an elementary school teacher, they always respond with, “I could -never- deal with those kids all day!!” but in my eyes it’s way more than that. I feel like some people only see ECE people as baby sitters but in reality, we are setting these children up to be successful in middle, high and even college. They wouldnt succeed without the basic knowledge we instill in them.
